Origins and Construction (1904–1905)

The Springbrook School District was officially organized in 1904, making it one of the newer rural school districts formed during Langlade County’s early settlement period. In May 1905, local residents raised $900 to construct a modern one‑room schoolhouse to serve children living in what was then a largely rural, agricultural area north of Antigo.

The school was named “Springbrook” after a nearby stream meandering close to the school, a common naming tradition for rural Wisconsin schools of the era.  Springbrook School remained in operation for 57 years, closing in 1962 during statewide school consolidation efforts. Small rural districts were absorbed into larger systems to improve efficiency and expand access to specialized instruction. At that time, students from the Springbrook district were incorporated into the Antigo Unified School District.  Rather than allowing the building to be lost, the schoolhouse was moved in July 1963 to the Langlade County Fairgrounds. There, it was preserved as a historic structure and educational exhibit.
